Hedges, shrubs, palms and small trees.
Pruning is where the difference between a gardener and a contractor shows. Cut at the wrong time or the wrong point and the plant either stops flowering, thins out at the base, or dies back where everyone can see it.
Hedges and screening
- Trimmed to shape with a defined top and face
- Tapered so the base gets light and stays dense
- Cut back progressively rather than all at once
- Dead and diseased growth removed from inside
Shrubs and ornamentals
- Pruned to shape and to promote new growth
- Timed around flowering so buds are not removed
- Thinned to open up airflow and reduce disease
- Rejuvenation pruning on tired or leggy plants
Palms and small trees
- Dead and hanging fronds removed
- Fronds kept clear of buildings, paths and signage
- Seed pods removed before they drop and stain
- Trees shaped to a maximum height of 3 metres
Where we stop
Above 3.5 metres, we bring in a certified arborist.
Our public liability policy excludes tree felling and lopping above 3.5 metres, and our safe work method statement caps pruning at 3 metres. That is a hard line, not a preference.
Where a job needs elevated work, we arrange a certified and separately insured arborist, coordinate site access, provide their certificate of currency before they start, and keep the whole thing inside our reporting. You still have one contact and one invoice.
Questions
About pruning and hedge work.
When is the best time to trim hedges?
Most screening hedges take a light trim two to three times a year, with the main shape cut in late winter or early spring before the growth flush. We schedule around flowering so you do not lose a season of colour.
Can you reduce a hedge that has got away?
Usually, but not in one cut. Taking too much at once leaves bare wood that may never reshoot. We reduce over two or three visits so the plant recovers with cover intact.
Do you remove the prunings?
Yes. Everything leaves the site the day we cut it and goes to a licensed green waste facility.
What about trees over 3.5 metres?
Subcontracted to a certified arborist, managed by us, with their insurance evidence supplied before works begin.
Do you treat pests and disease?
Yes. Plants are monitored at every visit and treatment is applied as part of the contract where minor, or quoted separately where a site-wide problem needs a programme.
Can you reshape overgrown palms?
Dead and hanging fronds and seed pods are removed as standard. Where the crown is above our height limit, the arborist handles it.
