Crisp hedge lines make a site look managed, even when growth is fast. The trick is timing: trim too late and you’re playing catch-up; trim too early and you’re doing double work.
Why hedging matters for first impressions
Entrances, driveways and pedestrian approaches set the tone. Symmetry, height control and clean edges improve perceived value, safety through sightlines, and wayfinding. A consistent cadence also prevents the scalped look that follows long gaps.
Seasonal schedule
- Spring: Establish shape early. Light, frequent trims encourage dense growth.
- Summer: Maintain silhouette; increase cadence on fast growers to avoid bulk.
- Autumn: Shape before slower growth; remove flowering remnants and seed pods.
- Winter: Structural trims for form, species dependent, ready for spring.
Before — hedge line drifted and bed overgrown.
After — hedge cut back to shape, bed cleared.
Fast vs slow growers
Fast, such as Murraya and Lilly Pilly: weekly or fortnightly light passes in spring and summer, less in winter.
Slow, such as Buxus: fewer trims, but keep edges crisp and focus on shape rather than volume removal.
Flowering species
Avoid cutting flower buds right before peak display; trim after flowering. For species attracting bees near shopfronts, schedule trims outside busy trading hours.
Low-noise hedging during trading hours
Battery platforms reduce noise and vibration, which suits medical, office and retail sites. Crews can trim during business hours with minimal disruption and no fuel smell near entries.
Safety & access
Cones and spotters near driveways, drop zones kept clear under hedges, cables and batteries managed, and eye, ear and hand protection in use throughout. Sightlines at intersections and signage are maintained at all times.
Height limit
Our pruning is capped at 3 metres. Our public liability cover excludes tree work above 3.5 metres, so anything higher is arranged with a separately insured arborist and coordinated by us.
